the questions that follow :
The 2012 Summer Olympics,
officially the games of the XXX Olympiad, and also more generally known as
London 2012, was a major international multisport event celebrated in the
tradition of the Olympic Games, as governed by the host the modern Olympic
games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948. The games
took place in London, United Kingdom, From 27 July to 12 August 2012. The first
event, the group stages in women’s football began two days earlier, on 25 July.
More than 10,000 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs)
participated.
The games received widespread
acclaim for their organization, with the volunteers, the British military and
public enthusiasm particularly highly. The opening ceremony, directed by Danny
Boyle, also received near – universal acclaim. During the games, Michael Phelps
became the most decorated Olympic
athlete of all time, winning his 22nd medal in swimming. Great
Britain achieved its highest tally of gold medals since 1908, finishing third
in the medal table. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei entered female athletes for
the first time meaning every currently
eligibly country has sent a female competitor to at least one Olympic
games. With women’s boxing included, the games became the first at which every
sport had female competitors.
The 2012 Summer Olympics saw an 83 member
contingent participating in the games as the most successful Olympics ever for
India in terms of the total medals won by India at an Olympic game. The
Olympics also saw the largest ever contingent from India participating in the
games i.e. 55 events. This was the most successful Olympic ever for India,
where India got six medals (one silver in the 25-metre Rapid Fire Shooting by
Vijoy Kumar, one silver in 66 kg freestyle wrestling by Shusil Kumar, one
bronze in shooting by Gagan Narang, one bronze in women’s badminton by Saina
Nehwal, one bronze in women’s 51 kg boxing by MC Mary Com, and one bronze in
wrestling by Yogeswar Dutta). The first medal of the London Olympics for India
was won by Gagan Narang in the 10m air rifle. This is the first event where
India won 2 medals. Shusil Kumar was the first Indian to win 2 Olympic medals since Norman Pritchard (who won
two hurdles medals for British India) and also the first to win 2 medals in the
same category.
